Rule Of Law Initiative Rolls Out Four New Alphabet Of Law Election Spots In Armenia
15.03.2007
In order to enhance public awareness of the importance of voting in the upcoming parliamentary election in May and Armenia’s presidential election in 2008, the Rule of Law Initiative is set to air four new televised public service announcements (PSAs) that focus on voting issues. The spots, the latest in the Rule of Law Initiative’s popular Alphabet of Law animated public education series aimed at children, are sponsored by the United Nations Development Project (UNDP).
On March 15, a press conference was held at the UNDP-Armenia office, where the heads of UNDP, the Rule of Law Initiative, OSCE and the Council of Europe/Armenia, jointly presented the new spots to the media. The press conference was followed by a reception for representatives of international, local and governmental organizations, as well as the diplomatic corps of Armenia. The Alphabet of Law PSAs were enthusiastically received, and many attendees requested copies to air during their programming. The new PSAs will be aired on TV and used in “street law” classes. They focus on the following topics:
1.The Right to Vote: explains why the right to vote is important and encourages youth to vote.
2.Selling Votes: shows that selling your vote also means losing your dignity.
3.Voting Fraud: examines different types of fraud and why citizens should take a stand against voter fraud.
4.Women in Elections: discusses women’s involvement in electing Armenia’s leadership.
Speaking to reporters during the reception, the Chairman of the Court of Cassation of Armenia, Hovhannes Manoukyan, said "This type of PSA, which addresses the younger generations, are very important. These four PSAs should be part of the curricula in secondary schools."
